AOC elects a new president every year at the Annual Conference in November. Each president develops an initiative to work on throughout their year as AOC president.
In 2019, under the leadership of Martha Schrader, AOC will focus on finding creative solutions to address the urgent housing needs of counties across the state.
Oregonians are hurting – many are being pushed out from their living area of choice due to either escalating rents, stagnant income levels, or both.
AOC members and stakeholders have relayed that the top three housing problems are affordability, availability, and a lack of diversity of housing types across communities.
To address all of these, AOC is ensuring that critical and new information will be shared with all counties regarding what is working and what is not with housing programs.
Whether these programs focus on workforce housing, affordable housing, or permanent supportive housing, building our collaborative understanding is pivotal toward a finding a holistic approach and solution. Together we can develop solution-based outcomes.
We must advocate more broadly in the State Legislature to find more funding for existing housing programs and pilot programs that propose creative solutions.
It is time to think outside the box, because that’s what Oregonians deserve. Working together, AOC members will help residents find communities where they can build lives and prosper.
