The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced mid-April that grant processes have been opened up for eight grant programs with more than $1.7 billion in funding for 2019.

The grants will support state and local governments and other entities with readiness plans natural disasters and other emergencies.

The following include grant programs and allocations accessible to counties:

Emergency Management Performance Grants (EMPG) – $350 million– EMPG funds local programs to build and maintain core infrastructure needs to protect, mitigate, and recover from disasters.

State Homeland Security Grant Program (HSGP) – HSGP is comprised of three grant programs:

  • State Homeland Security Program (SHSP): $415 million – HSGP supports state, local, and tribal efforts to prevent acts of terrorism and prepare to respond to threats and hazards that pose security risks for localities including planning, organization, trainings and admininstration.
  • Operation Stonegarden (OPSG) – $90 million -Operation Stonegarden funding is used to enhance cooperation and coordination among the Customs and Border Protection (CBP), U.S. Border Patrol (USPB) and local, state, and federal agencies along land and water borders.
  • Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) – $590 million– UASI is utilized by high-density metropolitan areas to build and maintain our capability to protect, prevent, and respond to security threats.

Port Security Grant Program (PSGP) – $100 million– Port security grants help to protect port infrastructure from terrorism and facilitate security mitigation protocols that support port recovery and resiliency.

Transit Security Grant Program (TSGP)– $88 million – Transit security grants provide funding for the protection and maintenance of critical surface transportation and public transit routes.
