Homelessness is an issue facing many of our communities. Lane County has taken an innovative approach to addressing the problem. In partnership with various local nonprofits and faith-based organizations, the county has supported the creation of “villages” and “rest stops” for individuals living on the street. On October 14, Lane County Commissioner Pat Farr gave members of the Housing Subcommittee a tour of the various housing sites.

First was Opportunity Village, which utilizes a mix of tiny houses without a fixed foundation as well as conestoga cabins. Residents live individually in their abodes, but share bathroom facilities (with showers on-site), a covered outdoor kitchen, and a large, heated yurt that serves as a communal living room and meeting space. Next was the Veterans’ Safe Spot, a “rest stop” with conestogas, bathrooms (no showers), and an enclosed kitchen space. The group concluded with a final “rest stop” that provides an additional layer of shelter to folks living in tents; this “rest stop” alternates location every six months.

Despite the occasional downpour, it was a great tour. In attendance were Commissioners Susan Brown, Bill Hall, Anne Schuster, Lianne Thompson, Curry and Marion county staff, as well as AOC staff. For a full agenda with links see here.

During the AOC Conference, there will be opportunities to tour Opportunity Village as well as the Veterans’ Safe Spot.
