As the result of a referendum against portions of 2017 House Bill 2391 (commonly known as the “hospital provider tax”), the legislature amended 2017 Senate Bill 229 (Sections 55 et seq) to call a special election on January 23, 2018, on the referendum. The legislature gave assurances that counties would be reimbursed for the costs of conducting that special election.  After some initial concern that the reimbursement would not take place until September of 2018, well after the turn of the fiscal year, the Joint Emergency Board met on May 23, 2018, to authorize the reimbursement, among other actions related to election finances.
